When to take reishi: morning or evening?
With most adaptogens, timing is mostly a matter of convenience. With reishi, though, there is one clear extra argument: its traditional association with calm and quiet. Let's look at when to take it.
The short answer: most people take it in the evening
In traditional Chinese medicine, reishi is one of the mushrooms said to “calm the spirit". That is why people most often take it in the evening – as part of a ritual that closes the day. A cup of reishi decoction or a spoonful of an evening blend becomes a signal to the body: we are slowing down.
Important: reishi is not a sleeping pill. Don't expect it to “switch you off". It is more about gently quietening down and creating a calmer atmosphere before bed.
When it makes sense during the day
Reishi is not a stimulant – it won't “kick-start" you in the morning like coffee. So feel free to take it during the day if:
- taking it in the evening doesn't suit you for any reason,
- you want to combine it with another morning ritual,
- it simply helps you stay consistent.
With reishi, consistency matters more than the exact time. Your body will appreciate you taking it steadily every day more than whether it is 8:00 or 20:00.
Reishi vs mushrooms for energy
It is worth distinguishing between two “families" of functional mushrooms:
- For vitality and focus during the day, lion's mane or cordyceps are traditionally used.
- For winding down in the evening, reishi is the one.
So if you combine several mushrooms, the logic of “energising in the morning, calming in the evening" will help you plan your day.
A practical evening ritual
A simple way to include reishi:
- An hour before bed, make yourself a warm (not hot) drink.
- Add a spoonful of an evening honey blend to lukewarm water or tea.
- Dim the lights, put your phone away and take a few minutes for yourself.
Note: never put honey blends such as Ježíšův klid into a hot liquid (above 38 °C) – raw honey contains active substances that are destroyed by heat.
Frequently asked questions
Will reishi make me fall asleep? It is not a sleeping pill. Traditionally it is associated with quietening down, but don't expect instant sleep on command.
Can I take it both morning and evening? Yes, if that suits you. Stick to the total recommended daily amount.
Does reishi work straight away? Rather gradually, with regular use over a period of weeks.
Summary
Reishi suits most people in the evening – because of its traditional association with calm. If that doesn't work for you, take it during the day; it is not a stimulant. What matters most is consistency, not the exact time.
